CELEBRATING

50 YEARS OF MOUNT EDELSTONE

The release of the 2002 Mount Edelstone Shiraz marks 50 years of the wine first produced by Cyril Alfred Henschke in 1952. To celebrate this significant event, Stephen and Prue Henschke hosted a black-tie dinner at the winery on March 14.

Among the guests were the Sydney restaurateur Beppi Polese who championed the wine from its early days; Rob and Judy Hirst, principals of Tucker Seabrook in Sydney, long-time agents for C A Henschke & Co; and Arnould d’Hautefeuille, the chairman of Société Jacques Bollinger, France, and his wife Laure.

Michael Voumard, Ali Cribb and their team created the magnificent Barossa-inspired feast that perfectly partnered a selection of Henschke wines. The full circle was completed as the produce for the dinner was grown by Ali and Michael at the old Henschke Krondorf property.

A highlight of the menu was the roasted autumn pheasant with grilled eggplant that Michael created especially for us; you will find the recipe on our website. It was also a fine match for the 1972 and 1986 vintages from our museum stock.

Throughout the evening Stephen led the guests through an engaging history of the Mount Edelstone vineyard. In her turn, Prue regaled guests with her memories of first meeting Stephen, and was passion personified as she spoke of the old vines that were planted by Ronald Angas in about 1912.

The night was a celebration of Cyril’s accomplishments in the Australian wine industry. It was also an acknowledgement of Stephen and Prue’s achievements in carrying on the legacy and making their own outstanding contributions to the label’s integrity and longevity.

Colin Angas, from whom Cyril ultimately bought the vineyard, was unable to attend the dinner, but his son John spoke on his behalf. He relayed a charming snapshot of Colin and Cyril’s friendship, and of the difficulties of pioneering viticulture.

Tradition is the core of Henschke, so it was fitting that sixth-generation Johann, Justine and Andreas were an integral part of this milestone celebration.

Another feature of the dinner was the launch of 50 Years of Mount Edelstone, 1952-2002, which records the heritage of the vineyard. The book beautifully illustrated, is available from cellar door for $19.95, or $22.50 including postage (within Australia). For more information regarding the book, e-mail info@henschke.com.au
