Region
Eden Valley
Description

Pale straw in colour with green hues. Vibrant aromas of lime and lemon zest, flowering lavender, white rose and citrus blossom are met by notes of stone-fruit and green peppercorn. An intense and generous palate of concentrated lemon, lime zest and stone-fruit flavours are perfectly balanced with peppercorn spice, pure citrus acidity and a tightly wound core, that leads to a crisp, dry and exquisitely long finish.

The grapes are grown by Eden Valley contract growers of long standing with vines up to 50yo. The grapes were delivered between 14 Mar and 1 Apr, and this spread has given the wine excellent mouthfeel and balance, only a touch behind its two siblings.

Background
The riesling takes its name from a local landmark, Peggy’s Hill, at the top of the range between Eden Valley and Keyneton. Produced from selected traditional Henschke Eden Valley growers, whose vines are up to 50 years old, growing in low-vigour ancient Cambrian soils at around 500m altitude. The Eden Valley riesling displays exceptional varietal and regional characteristics.

Vintage Description

A later start to picking and a mild period of ripening finished with the last grapes being picked in mid-May. A wet 2016 winter gave us a good foundation for our predominantly dry-grown vines on their own roots, and a cool, wet and fiercely windy spring followed, with a slightly higher spring rainfall than the Barossa Valley, which delayed flowering, though conditions during set meant that yields were at average levels. A mild summer with regular rainfall events followed, which allowed the grapes to reach full physiological maturity. The significant rainfall events largely missed our area and therefore we harvested the majority of our grapes in healthy condition. As always, careful hand picking in the vineyard and sorting of grapes as they were processed made sure that quality was not compromised. 2017 will be characterised by impeccably floral and vibrant rieslings, an indicator of the slightly cooler conditions.

Beautiful precision of kaffir lime, granny smith apple and mixed spice define a crunchy style with just the right balance between the tension of cool nights and the ripe fleshiness of a later ripening season to make for an immediately enticing style.
