Eden Valley

Pale straw with green hues. Fragrant and focussed aromas of lime juice, lime blossom and kaffir lime leaf, with hints of grapefruit zest and green peppercorn. Pure and delicate flavours of lime juice, lemon and pink grapefruit are entwined with fine lime acidity and river pebble minerality, creating a textural mouthfeel and a subtly textured finish.

Elegant, fresh, crisp, fruit/acid balance spot on, the finish particularly good. Effectively this is a reserve selection. 95 points

The Henschke vineyards are nurtured under biodynamic principles
Cyril Henschke developed the Henschke reputation for premium riesling wines as early as the 1950s from the vineyard areas of Eden Valley, Keyneton and Springton in the Eden Valley wine region. This region provides ideal ripening conditions for the riesling grape and has a unique track record of exceptional ageing potential for the variety. The Eden Valley riesling vineyard is planted on sandy loam over gravel and bedrock with patches of clay. The wine is named after ancestor Julius Henschke, a highly acclaimed artist and sculptor.

Vintage Description

A moderately wet winter combined with average spring conditions meant that vines grew well in the mild weather. Ideal flowering conditions in late spring/early summer lead to the potential for near-average yields. Late December became warm and dry and assured for healthy canopies with low disease pressure. The summer months of January and February were typically hot and dry but extreme heat periods were shorter than in recent memory, characterised instead by well above-average overnight temperatures. The old-vine vineyards coped well with the warm nights, their deep roots able to withstand the warming and drying effect on the topsoil, maturing the balanced crops as autumn approached. March and April provided the light and warmth to the Eden Valley which lead to full and balanced maturity being achieved across all grape varieties. With warm sunny days and cool nights, the dry autumn guaranteed that pristinely-healthy grapes arrived in the fermenters.
All in all, the 2018 vintage will be considered a standout of this decade. Shiraz is certainly one of the highlights of the season, fittingly so in the year we celebrated our 150th anniversary of family winemaking.

"A very attractive, floral, lemon and white stone-fruit riesling with a vibrant and succulent feel to the lightly chalky palate. There’s a lot of energy and brightness here. Very approachable now."

"This is a consistently outstanding riesling. It's sourced from high up in the Eden Valley. Such a delicate spicy wine, yet it has the potential to cellar for at least two decades. Floral and citrus notes, with a sprinkle of bath salts. A very pleasing crisp, wet-pebbly character."

"Elegant and superbly focused, this vivacious young riesling has an estery bouquet of white flowers, apple, pear and lime juice with suggestions of lavender and a faint chalkiness. With a marginal sweetness balanced by a soft acidity, it reveals a luscious but measured core of fruit overlying a crunchy, mineral undercarriage before finishing with effortless length and poise."

Huon Hooke The Real Review

March, 19 2019

"Light straw-yellow hue and a dried herb, dried-floral bouquet, the palate grapy, fruity and soft, with a tickle of sweetness and soft acidity, which renders the wine very approachable in youth...The dried-flower aroma is classic Eden Valley."

"Julius. Svelte riesling of limey freshness and floral perfume. Opens with frangipani and mixed citrus peel scents, flavours tend to the leaner, dry spectrum of lime flavours, texture is squeaky and lightly chalky. Refreshing, bright, brisk. Good drinking."
