Description

Pale straw with green-gold hues. Lifted aromas of grapefruit zest, lemon and passionfruit husk are complemented by hints of lime leaf and white peach. Deliciously concentrated flavours of grapefruit, lime brûlée and notes of tarragon lead to a fine citrus and passionfruit acidity, providing tension and minerality for a long and balanced finish.

Beautifully elegant and fresh green apples, wet stones and a fine citrus edge. The palate is very smoothly cut, elegant and flavorful.

Background
Fifth-generation winemakers Stephen and Prue Henschke established their Lenswood vineyard in the Adelaide Hills in 1981. At 550m, the Lenswood vineyards offer not only magnificent views over the traditional vine country but also higher rainfall and humidity at the right time of the year, cooler temperatures to retain high natural acidity, and still enough sunshine to fully ripen the grapes. The riesling vineyard is planted on a perfect west facing slope on loam soil containing shale fragments. It was so named as it overlooks the apple orchards operated by the Green family since 1893.

Vintage Description

After a typical wet and cold winter, spring brought particularly mild and unstable weather to Lenswood with fogs, rain and numerous hail events, fortunately with no resulting damage. These cold hail blasts delayed flowering, and due to an early Harvest Moon, the growing season became quite compressed, requiring more work in the vineyard with shoot thinning and foliage lifting. A long, dry mild spell from Christmas to Easter provided ideal ripening conditions; allowing tannins to mature, acids to moderate and depth of flavour to develop. Fruit quality across the board was outstanding, the whites in particular for their purity and balance, which really defined the season after some challenging early conditions. 2018 was a fantastic year for Lenswood, with high natural acidities and excellent varietal character.
