Region
Barossa Valley
Description

Medium garnet with ruby hues. Fragrant, perfumed florals lead to aromas of lifted raspberry, strawberry and blueberry compote, with spicy mace, nutmeg, white pepper and crushed flowering herbs. Vibrant red currant, red cherry, rhubarb and plum flavours are balanced by white pepper spice, fine acidity, and supple, textural tannins driving a long, lush finish.

Deduct shiraz from the GSM equation and the result is paler, more savoury in its spicy allure, more fragrantly aromatic and more bony in its tannin structure. Red berry fruits and dried herbs are carried on a refined trail of impeccably handled tannins that promise great things in the cellar.

Maturation
Vintage 2019 shaped up to be a challenging one, with below-average yields, however the quality was very high, with beautiful expressions of varietal character and generally good balance and structure. Yields were down due to ‘hen and chicken’ (berries of different sizes), caused by cold, wet conditions during flowering. Shiraz yields were the most affected by these factors, influenced by hail and severe wind causing poor fruit set. A dry winter, spring and summer with warmer than average temperatures in January and February lead to the advancement of maturity of all grape varieties in the Barossa Valley and an early onset of vintage.
Background
The Bootmaker Mataro Grenache pays tribute to the bounteous skillset of the Silesian Lutheran pioneering settlement of the Barossa. After plying his trade and building the Bootmaker’s Cottage in the hills east of the Barossa Valley, the subsequent generations of Carl Pfeiffer’s bootmaking family resettled on the deep sands of the river flats of the North Para, farming an eclectic array of grape varieties and stone fruits. Well suited to warm and dry conditions, old-vine mataro and grenache thrives in this environment, producing the emblematic delicious spice, elegance and svelte tannins.
