Barossa Valley

Deep crimson with garnet hues. Lifted aromas of fresh Provencal herbs, black pepper and anise, revealing notes of cherry, Satsuma plum, blackberry, mulberry compote and blood orange zest. The palate is rich and juicy with fleshy raspberry, ripe plum and spiced berry compote creating layers of texture with fine, grainy tannins and linear acidity for a balanced and elegantly long finish.

Maturation

Grenache, mataro and shiraz vinified separately. Matured in seasoned French hogsheads for 8 months prior to blending and bottling.

Background

Named as a tribute to the early German Silesian pioneers of the Barossa, many of whom carried the first name of Johann. Their toil, perseverance and conservatism in hardship has meant that the many generations that followed rejoiced in the riches of their prudent efforts. This blend is just one of those blessings. The traditions and culture have survived to this day, including the traditional winemaking techniques of open-top fermentation used in this grenache blend. It is produced from low-yielding, old, gnarled, dry-grown bush and trellised vines on limestone soils from selected vineyards in the Barossa Valley. Barossa growers traditionally referred to their vineyard as their ‘garden’, from the German weingarten.

Vintage Description

A moderately wet winter combined with average spring conditions meant that vines grew well in the mild weather. Ideal flowering conditions in late spring/early summer lead to the potential for near-average yields. Late December became warm and dry and assured for healthy canopies with low disease pressure. The summer months of January and February were typically hot and dry but extreme heat periods were shorter than in recent memory, characterised instead by well above-average overnight temperatures. March and April provided the light and warmth which lead to full and balanced maturity being achieved across all grape varieties. All in all, the 2018 vintage will be considered a standout of this decade, fittingly so in the year we celebrated our 150th anniversary of family winemaking.
