Deeply perfumed aromas of freshly cut red berries, with hints of rhubarb, cherry and liquorice, garrigue herbs, pinched lavender and more subtle notes of mace and white pepper. The palate is rich, spicy and focused, with vibrant raspberry and mulberry fruit, fresh pithy acidity and a long, elegant finish of fine, silky tannins.

Grenache and mataro vinified separately. Matured in seasoned French oak hogsheads for 10 months prior to blending and bottling.
- Background
Named as a tribute to the early Silesian community of the Barossa, many of whom carried the first name of Johann. Their toil, perseverance and conservatism in hardship has meant that the many generations that followed rejoiced in the riches of their prudent efforts. This blend is just one of those blessings. The traditions and culture have survived to this day, including the traditional winemaking techniques of open-top fermentation used in this grenache blend. It is produced from low-yielding Barossa Survivor Vines, categorised by the Barossa Old Vine Charter as vines that are equal or greater than 70 years old. These gnarled, dry-grown bush and trellised vines are grown on limestone soils from selected vineyards in the Barossa Valley. Barossa growers traditionally referred to their vineyard as their âgardenâ, from the German weingarten.

Vintage Description
Average winter rainfall was followed by minor frost events late in September and spring rains in early October. Budburst was even with good fruitfulness although heat bursts in late November affected fruit set. Strong winds in early December caused some damage to the canopies but the fruit remained disease free. January was mild and dry with a short heat wave late in the month at veraison, followed by rainfall in early February. The lead up to vintage and conditions during ripening remained cool, cloudy but dry. The fruit showing balanced acidity, excellent colour and great flavour development.
