Sixth-generation winemaker Johann Henschke is the eldest child of Stephen and Prue, growing up at the family’s winery in Keyneton.
With a natural curiosity for science, he decided to continue the family winemaking tradition, completing a Bachelor of Viticulture and Oenology at Adelaide University in 2005 and a Master of Viticulture in Geisenheim, Germany in 2012.
He has extensive experience in his field, working with winemakers such as Leeuwin Estate in Australia, Felton Road in New Zealand, Isole e Olena in Italy and Arietta in the USA.
While studying his master’s degree, he met his now wife Angela Penalba de las Heras, who has a master’s degree in dentistry, and comes from a family with a long winemaking tradition, Torremilanos, in Ribera del Duero, Spain.
In 2013, Angela and Johann based themselves at Henschke, while Johann worked closely with his parents. Due to the health challenges of their second child Bosco, they moved to Spain and are now based in Madrid.
Johann continues his work with Henschke from afar in the role of Business Development Manager. He employs his broad experience to guide the family business as it transitions from the fifth to the sixth generation.
