Fourth-generation winemaker Cyril’s greatest legacy was his ability to be a visionary, with his innate understanding of fruit quality and site selection.
Henschke Keyneton Euphonium, now celebrating over 60 vintages, was created by Cyril as Henschke Dry Red in 1958.
In the 1980s Prue and I added cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot to the shiraz, for a more savoury and textural composition. Our new name, Keyneton Euphonium, pays tribute to second-generation winemaker Paul Gotthard Henschke who formed the first family brass band in 1888. Instruments included the warm, rich sounding B flat euphonium - still a treasured family heirloom.
During vintage tastings of red ferments from long-standing grower fruit over a number of years, we discovered wines from some vineyards that were so utterly captivating they cried out for a life of their own.
Tappa Pass Shiraz is crafted from 70-year-old, low-yielding vines at Tappa Pass and Light Pass. Marble Angel Cabernet Sauvignon, born from ancient red clay and limestone soils at Light Pass, is named after acclaimed sculptor Julius Henschke, who sourced his white Angaston marble from a nearby quarry.
These three legacy wines give an exceptional perspective of variety and vintage across the Eden Valley and northern Barossa, contributing richly to the Henschke tradition for future generations.
