BACKGROUND

The Barossa has a core of grape growers of German Silesian descent dating back six generations, staunchly continuing the traditions of their forebears. Up to 70-year-old, low-yielding shiraz is selected from historical grower vineyards at Tappa Pass and Light Pass, growing in low-fertility soils that range from terra rossa to red-brown earths, derived from Neoproterozoic bedrock more than 542 million years old. These vineyards provide exceptional quality shiraz fruit from both the Eden Valley and Barossa Valley regions of the Barossa, vinified in traditional open-top fermenters.

VINTAGE

Above average 2021 winter rainfall helped to refill soil profiles and the cool, slow start to the growing season resulted in budburst occurring slightly later than average. A frost event occurred on 11 October, followed by an extreme hail event on 28 October, and the cold and wet weather in mid-November coincided with flowering, which impacted fruit-set and potential yields. December and January provided a burst of summer heat, however at the beginning of vintage another severe weather event dealt a deluge of rain and even more hail to some parts of the region. While mild and dry conditions followed, the cumulative impacts of the season’s weather events resulted in lower yields across the region. The 2022 wines show great aromatics, balance of acidity and a bright core of flavour.

“Lifted aromas of blueberry and boysenberry are laced with crushed violets, unfolding into deeper layers of black cherry, blackberry, star anise, clove-studded orange, and a dusting of black pepper. Subtle hints of old leather and dark chocolate…The palate follows with a cool-fruited, mineral-driven elegance—blueberry, mulberry and black cherry glide through, supported by nutmeg, pepper and clove. Firm, fine-grained tannins frame the wine beautifully, while bright black cherry acidity carries it...

"Deep, bright red-purple in the glass, with typical Eden Valley raspberry/crushed leaf and fragrant herb aromas. The wine is elegantly medium-full in body weight with a deceptively firm wave of tannins that cleanses the back-palate and finish. Juicy at the core, the raspberry/mulberry fruit flavours are captivating."

HUON HOOKE, THE REAL REVIEW

94+ Points
Fragrant blackberry, elderberry aromas with cedar, marzipan notes. Full bodied and expressive with abundant blackberry, black cherry, elderberry fruits, plentiful chocolaty, touch grippy tannins and underlying cedarwood, roasted almond, roasted walnut notes. Grippy/ chewy firm at the finish with bittersweet/ chinotto/ aniseed nuances.

ANDREW CAILLARD MW, THE VINTAGE JOURNAL

"Fruit-driven aromas of blueberries, blackberries, mulberries, red currants, baking spices, cedar and smoked paprika. The palate is full-bodied with silky tannins, a silky texture and a densely packed mid palate that is seamlessly integrated and refined. There is a wonderfully mineral edge to the firm yet generous finish."

"Ripe satsuma plum, black cherry and blackberry fruits with hints of black olive tapenade, bay leaf, five-spice, cedar, vanilla pod, licorice, dark chocolate, earth and pan juices...Tight, powdered schisty tannins and a bright seam of acidity with excellent persistence on the finish."
